SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(November 30, 2000)–Plath & Company General Contractors of San Francisco has won three awards from the San Francisco Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for outstanding work in the area of residential and commercial remodeling. This is the second year in a row that Plath & Company has won a NARI award for outstanding work in the remodeling field.

The new NARI awards include recognition for a remodel of the historic Sequoia Theatre in Mill Valley as well as for the extensive remodeling of homes in the Seacliff and Pacific Heights neighborhoods of San Francisco. In 1999 Plath & Company won the NARI Grand Award for the conversion of an industrial space in San Francisco’s South of Market area into a contemporary urban loft.

Plath & Company is known for fine custom home building as well as the restoration and remodeling of landmark residential and commercial properties in the San Francisco Bay Area. Plath & Company (www.plathco.com) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its founding this year.

Plath & Company won the Merit Award for Entire House Remodel for a 1929 home in San Francisco’s elegant Seacliff neighborhood. During the remodel the character of the Mediterranean-style home was preserved with major Renovations in the kitchen, master bedroom, living room and dining room. Plath converted an old garage into a new family room, and the basement was expanded and modernized. The plumbing and the electrical and heating systems were also modernized. Plath & Company worked with architect Jorge De Quesada on this project.

Steve Plath, president of Plath & Company, said, "This is a legacy home that has served three generations of a San Francisco family. After 70 years, the family decided that the home should be renovated back to its original refined and comfortable design, while at the same time modernized for today’s standards. Window sizes were increased to optimize spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean, and one bedroom became a large walk-in closet."

Plath & Company also won the Merit Award for Universal Remodel of the historic Sequoia Theatre in Mill Valley, Calif., an Art Deco movie theatre which first opened its doors in 1929. Plath & Company restored the original Deco architectural details including the barrel vault ceilings, grilled lighting, and plaster moldings. Plath also renovated the auditorium seating, installed a new digital sound system, brought the marquee back to its original 1920s design, and renovated the lobby and box office. With the addition of a wheelchair lift and other ADA improvements, Plath brought new radiance and modern usability to the graceful theatre. The architect was Arnie Lerner.

Plath & Company captured second place for the interior remodel of a large residence in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco. Originally built in the 1920s, this grand home once served as a foreign consulate. A complete remodel of the top floor of the home set the stage for simple but elegant décor. The bathroom features an elliptical terrazzo tub, Carrara marble walls and custom-manufactured Japanese glass tiles, accented by polished nickel fixtures imported from England. Plath & Company worked with architect Nestor Matthews.

During the remodel the family continued to live downstairs, so extreme measures were taken by Plath & Company to ensure their safety and comfort. First, Plath isolated the living space for dust filtration. Second, in order to maintain a tranquil environment for the family, remodeling workers used an exterior scaffolding 60 feet high to access the building. In addition, the first floor ceilings were waterproofed during the installation of the terrazzo, a process which can use large amounts of water during surfacing and polishing.
